- Run away from mum. At this stage, make sure you stay in sight of mum.
Ta-da! The game starts in plain sight. |
- Turn back to check that mum is watching.
- When she looks, display your cheekiest grin.
Something like this. |
- Run down the nearest aisle. (Bonus points if you manage to knock down every book you pass.)
Run, run, run! |
- Stop, and turn around. Wait until you see mum peek around the corner.
- When she does, display your cheekiest grin. Accompanying cheeky chuckle optional.
- Run across to the next aisle. (Bonus points if you manage to knock down every book you pass. Additional bonus points if you manage to kick any of them back into the other aisle.)
- Stop, and turn around. Wait until you see mum peek around the corner.
- If mum doesn’t peek, check on her.
Mum’s coming! Run! |
- When she sees you, display your cheekiest grin.
- Run into the next aisle.
- Stop, and turn around. Wait until you see mum peek around the corner.
- If mum doesn’t peek, check on her through the books.
Found you, mum! Why aren’t you chasing me? |
- Run into the next aisle. If you really want to spice things up, run across a few before ducking down a random aisle.
- Stop, and turn around. Wait until you see mum peek around the corner.
- This time, do not check on her. When you hear her cries escalate in panic, chuckle to yourself. Mum makes this game so much fun when she pretends to be worried about you!
- When mum sees you, display your cheekiest grin. Accompanying
cheekymaniacal laugh mandatory.
I was here the whole time! HAHAHA! |
- Scream when mum grabs you and carries you back to the pram.
- Thrash around as she attempts to clip you into the pram. Continue the screaming you started before.
- Next time you go to the library, do it all again.
Does your child like to play hide and seek in the library? Or elsewhere?
Aroha @ Colours of Sunset says
LOL Emily! He is so darn cute!!! But I have to say, I am NOT a fan of the toddler hide-and-seek game. We played it in KMart once. I almost had a heart attack! Can laugh about it now – almost. x Aroha
Emily says
Thanks A! My girl played it in Target once. Worst three minutes of my life.
Lara at This Charming Mum says
Libraries these days are all about community engagement and interactivity, but I can’t get past the SHHHH!!! years. This leaves me totally stressed out when I take noisy kids to a library – even though the librarians couldn’t care less! Luckily we have a lot of books at home!
Emily says
I still feel guilty as my two tear around the kids’ section, because you can see people studying on their computers up the other end. Luckily iPhones tend to save the day!
Tash says
Your post exactly sums up our trips to the library. My Mr TT (age 2) also adds another step – “Attempt to run out of the library, press the lift button, enter lift, press G for ground button and without looking back escape to your freedom.” Fun times.
Emily says
Oh no! I’ll admit I laughed a little at this, but it was a sympathy laugh, I swear. x
Renee Wilson says
Now that is one cheeky grin. He is absolutely gorgeous. My toddler likes to pull as many books off the shelf as possible. Sometimes she’ll sit on them, sometimes she’ll flick through way too fast and leave torn pages in her wake. I’m sure the librarians love us ๐ Visiting via #teamIBOT
Emily says
Thanks Renee – he is cheeky adorable! I’m sure the librarians love us too – especially when I go to the reserve shelf to grab something I’ve put on hold and he mixes up all the labels…
EssentiallyJess says
Oh I have played this game many, many times!
Lucky he is cute right? ๐
Emily says
Lucky indeed!
Emily @ Have A Laugh On Me says
He is so cute and cheeky! I must say it looks like an old library? We just got a brand new one with kids rocking horses and everything! When I take all 3 it’s quite a performance!
Emily says
It is a bit old, but still good. One near us has recently been made over so we’ll have to go check it out.
Sarah says
Looks like a fun game ~(although maybe not quite so much for Mum …)
Emily says
Not so much fun for the 4yo either – her book reading practice kept getting interrupted!
Malinda @mybrownpaperpackages says
I actually took my toddler to the library this week and she actually sat still while I looked at books, shuffled along when I was ready and went home when it was time to go home without a fuss. (the pocket full of muesli bar bribery I was quietly snaffling to her out of sight of the librarians may have helped me)
Emily says
Nice work. My little man would just take the bribery food and run away with it. Probably smushing it into books as he went!
Sandra Kelly says
I was giggling reading this… oh that pic of the cheeky grin… priceless and infectious. Beautiful post. ๐
Emily says
Thanks Sandra! As unfun as it can be, the grin is all I’ll remember in ten years’ time!
Eva Lewis (The Multitasking Mummy) says
Yes! We went to the library today, I turned my back for a moment and he’d started running up the stairs to the next level. I had a trolley which I quickly had to put to the side and by the time I’d gotten up to level two I couldn’t see him. Finally I did find him and he’d managed to get a trolley, put two dvd’s in it and was waiting at the front of the elevator!!!
Emily says
Haha, that’s hilarious! He knows what the deal is.
Rebecca Senyard says
Your son is so cheeky and he has a gorgeous grin to show for it! I need to take my girls to the Library. I forget that it’s a place to take the kids for an outing.
Emily says
My kids LOVE the library. We’d go there more often if they fenced off the children’s section!

Thanks for linking lovely x

Thanks for having me x

Oh shit, I have 2.5 year old who LOVES doing this. The worst ones are where he plays hide and seek in stores that have racks of clothing. I swear to god that little trick has given me more than my fair share of grey hairs. Can we have those implantable GPS devices for toddlers already?
Emily says
Oh my goodness, YES, the clothing rack hide is the worst. 4yo still does that!
mark @ fullhalfglass says
I’ve always found that if you use quick set glue that it seems to keep them in the one place. Too harsh?
Emily says
Having played this game three more times since publishing this post, I’m going to say harsh but fair.
