Clucky

February 10, 2015 By Emily 67 Comments

You know that feeling you get when you hold a brand-spanking-new baby, and they’re so soft and squishy and adorable and trusting and THAT SMELL, oh that newborn smell, hits you and you tear up and blame that eyelash you had in your eye last week as you wonder if anyone would notice if you just kept this baby forever?

No? Just me?

I’m actually done having kids. (Unless the universe decides otherwise, of course.) But man oh man, do I still get hit hard by the cluck-cluck train every time I hold a bub!

my-babies

(These were my babies. CLUCK CLUCK CLUCK.)

So… it’s song rewrite time! Here’s a little ditty I wrote called ‘Clucky’. A ditty you’re supposed to read to the tune of Pharrell Williams’s ‘Happy’.

Enjoy.

—

It might seem crazy what I’m about to say
I don’t wanna be pregnant, not another day
But when I hold a bub, I could go to space
Keep it forever, wouldn’t that be ace

Because I’m clucky
Cluck along if you feel like babies are just too cute
Because I’m clucky
Cluck along if you just want to squeeze that Wondersuit

Because I’m clucky
Cluck along if you don’t even care about the poo
Because I’m clucky
Cluck along if you feel like that’s what you wanna do

Here come bad news talking this and that
Yeah, this bub ain’t mine, gotta give it back
I’m sure I’m okay, I’ll be just fine
Actually can I please hold it just one more time?
Here’s why…

Because I’m clucky
Cluck along if you feel like babies are divine
Because I’m clucky
Cluck along if you think bubs are cute even when they whine

Because I’m clucky
Clap along if you don’t care about the lack of sleep
Because I’m clucky
Clap along if this baby is something you want to keep

Clucky, bring me down
Can’t nothing, bring me down
Cuddles too fun to bring me down
Can’t nothing, bring me down

Because I’m clucky
Clap along if you feel like a baby knows everything
Because I’m clucky
Clap along if you want, and join in with me and sing

Because I’m clucky
Clap along if you know that happiness is a bub
Because I’m clucky
Clap along if you’re in my super duper clucky club

—

So who’s joining my club? Do you get a case of the cluck-clucks when you hold a bub, or are you relieved to hand it back?

Yup. I’m clucky. My last kids are three and it’s really hit me lately that my baby days are over. It’s very sad. Yesterday I held a baby for an extended period, I found it was much nicer than watching a baby and feeling clucky because somehow, there was some sense of relief that I got to hand that adorable hunk of chunk back and not change the smelly nappy.

This song rewrite was brought on by a day of packing up baby toys and clothes. Passing them on to friends – yay – but it was such a weird feeling to put a solid line under the baby days.

My version will help with that.

Clap along if you feel that you don’t wanna sit in poo
    (Change a nappy)
Clap along if you feel that you wanna be dry too
    (Change a nappy)
Clap along if you know what dry bum means to you
    (Change a nappy)
Clap along if know whatcha Mum has gotta do

    Still clucky?

You know, I’ve never been a clucky person. I never have gone goo goo over a little baby which is why I am totally INSANE having another one!?!? I’m not sure why I thought I needed to do that. Great ditty but x

My youngest started high school this year and my eldest is now in Year 11. I can’t ever remember being clucky and that hasn’t really changed. Although I don’t have much access to new born babies these days, with my younger extended family who are at the baby making stage in life now 4000km away.

We’ve had the neighbour’s cat decide to adopt us. It’s a rather eccentric and gorgeous ragdoll. I’ve never been a cat person but you wouldn’t know it, if you looked at me these days. I wonder if it’s my way of dealing with the cluckiness and the girls getting older and far too independant. Somewhere different to focus my energy.

The only time I get (mildly) clucky is when my two-year-old is extra toddler-cute. I don’t get clucky over babies (the sleepless nights ruined me), nor do I get clucky over other people’s kids. But a two-year-old? heaven help me!

Too cute! I’ve never been overly clucky and we thought we were ‘done’ too. But life had other ideas and now I’m pregnant with baby #3 who is due next month. So perhaps while you’re spinning Pharrell Williams, I could play Justin Bieber’s ‘Never say never’ 🙂
