On 24 February, my dear friend Heidi posted this on facebook:
My gorgeous 10 year old daughter, Charlie-Louise, wanted to participate in this years ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ and as a supportive (but really scared) mother I have said I will do it with her. She said that she will still be beautiful with no hair as beauty is on the inside! She makes me very proud. The current photo was taken on the weekend with our hair down so you see how much hair we will be losing if we reach our goal of $2000.
If we reach our goal of $2000 we will shave our hair, Its over 1 meter length of hair. If we raise under $2000 we will colour our hair. Please help by donating & forward to as many people as you can.
Heidi and Charlie continued with updates and requests for donations. A friend also arranged a professional photo shoot to capture the long, flowing hair.
On 4 March, they were just over $1k. By 8 March, they had passed the $2k mark. The shave was on!
Five hours before the shave, they were just shy of $3k. They did one more big facebook push, aiming to break through the $3k mark.
Heidi had her ponytail cut off first. I have known Heidi since I was six years old, and cannot remember a time when her hair was shorter than shoulder-length. So you can understand the emotional reaction!
She recovered enough to cut off Charlie’s ponytail.
And then the shaving began!
They finished the shave to find that they had not only broken through the $3k mark, but smashed through $4k as well.
That’s more than $4,000 dollars raised for the Leukaemia Foundation. All because a ten-year-old girl understands that beauty is on the inside.
And it shines through to the outside, too.
As at midday on 18 March, Heidi and Charlie had raised $4,231. They’re now hoping to reach $5k before donations close next week. If you’re able and willing to contribute, you can visit their team page and sponsor their shave.
What’s the bravest thing you’ve done for a good cause?

Such awesome, brave women they are! So lovely to have such a thoughtful daughter, you sure do know some lovely souls Em x
They are wonderful, and for so many more reasons than this one! Thanks Em x
Wow, that has made my day.
Heidi and Charlie are wonder women. Thank you for sharing.
I have run a few 14km and 1/2 marathon to raise money for Breast Cancer and World Vision .
I am thinking of shaving my hair (i did before due to chemo though) for the cause.
Good luck Trish. Will check on over to your page to donate. x
Oh wow, I can’t compete with that. The 40 Hour Famine a few times as a teenager probably!
Good on these two – that’s a great thing to do. And bonus, they both look good with short hair!
Ah, the 40 Hour Famine. Those good ol’ days of barley sugar and water!
Wonderful…I love this cause as it requires bravery and sheer nerve! Several of my students have done it over the years 🙂
That’s it – it’s not recovering from a run. You wear the effects for a long time afterwards.
These two gorgeous girls should be so proud of themselves! And they both still look just as beautiful 🙂
They are and they do. x
Amazing! I am overwhelmed by that little girls gorgeous attitude and her mum’s wonderful supportive nature. So glad they raised so much money for such a brave step
I love that she came up with it. And they donated her hair as well.
That’s fantastic – such a lot of hair to lose!
Yep, they should get lots of wigs out of that!
Wonderful. I know a brave young mum who has just done this too for charity 🙂 Fantastic!
Well done to the brave young mum in your life too!
That is pure awesomeness right there. You must be so so proud of your friend, Em. How beautiful to see kids understanding the value of such a cause. xo
I am. It has me wondering what I’ll say if Ashleigh ever turns to me and says the same thing. I hope I’d have the courage to do it too.
This post made me quite emotional (okay, I’m a sucker!). But what an awesome kid!
Aw, I hope it was in a good way!
You all must be so proud – what an amazing young girl and what a brave thing to do! So pleased they raised so much money for such a worthy cause!
They cracked the $5k! WOOHOO!!!
