(I)
Farewell to you, beloved friend
I do not need you now
I know the workings of the world
The what
The why
The how
You were fun to believe in for a time
But the world, it works without you
And as I lost my innocence
I could not help but doubt you
Spells have tricks behind them
Illusions, an explanation
So go
You no longer have a place
In my imagination
So go
You no longer have a place
In my imagination
(II)
I never thought we’d meet again
It’s caught me by surprise
To see you’ve found a new home
There
Inside my children’s eyes
The bubble wand is aptly named
From nothing, bubbles grow
And why do rainbows appear in the sky?
They don’t presume to know
The way that flowers bloom, then die
The way the traffic lights change
To them, these things aren’t scientific
But marvellous
Wonderful
Strange
They gaze anew at everything
The sun, its resting place
They even gaze in wonder
At this tired, haggard face!
But while they see you everywhere
I need only look one way
At them
My girl
My baby boy
Each and every day

Each month, I receive a writing prompt as part of a link-up called Writers Reveal. This piece was inspired by the prompt ‘magic’ from Becky at Imagine! Create! Write!.
Check out the other Writers Reveal posts at Melissa Writes, JF Gibson, the Wolfe’s Den, Imagine! Create! Write!, A Parenting Life, ghostnapped, always Josefa, Have a Laugh on Me and Emily Morgan Writes.
Does magic exist in your life?
Bravo! I was waiting to see who was going to be credited for such a wonderful piece, lo and behold it’s Emily!
Very well done, loved it.
Thank you Joe, that’s lovely. Means a lot.
OH Em I love this! Love, love, love.
Thank you Jodi!
Wonderful piece. I love how you captured the magic π
Thank you Melissa! Loving the Writers Reveal.
As soon as I started reading your post I imagined a child’s imaginary friend. xxx Rae
Definitely part of the magic. My 3yo has five imaginary friends now. It’s adorable to watch.
I never had an imaginary friend, but I hope my kids do, I bet it would be nice and comforting! xx
I don’t think I ever had one. Will have to ask my mum!
Magic post ! I believe in all things magic – life would be boring without it!
Thanks, Ashley. I’d like to. I do think my kids are pretty magical!
So beautiful, and made me really emotional – in a good way. It’s like saying farewell to childhood. Magic, Em. xx
Thank you. It’s a farewell and a reawakening. The circle of life.
Wow. This is really impressive. You are such a talented writer.
That is so lovely. Thank you.
Oh wow, you captured how I feel so perfectly. The wonder on kids’ faces and the way the smallest things are miraculous to them – it’s one of my greatest joys of being a mother.
I was just talking to a friend about this. They went to an animal sanctuary and their child was amazed by the kangaroo’s legs. And it makes you amazed too. They ARE amazing. So strong! The kangaroo can jump so far with them! Things really do seem magical when you take the time to notice them again.
What a lovely piece. We all need a touch of magic in our lives
We certainly do!
Really gorgeous, and clever. It is so nice to view the world anew through the innocence and wonder of our children. Nicely done Love it
Thanks Sarah. I think innocence is key!
I honestly thought this was a piece you were including written by a famous poet. Just lovely, Emily. You have a real talent. x
Maxabella, you have no idea how happy this comment has made me. All of them have, but I respect and enjoy your writing so much that this has just made my day. Thank you.
Oh Emily, I love it! At first I thought you were talking specifically about belief in Santa Clause which would have been very timely as we’re about to go through our first Christmas with our oldest no longer believing in Santa. Boo hoo! I can’t help feeling we’ve lost something…but that’s growing up, isn’t it?
It is indeed! Very timely – I’m dreading the day our oldest doesn’t believe. She’s three-and-a-half – surely I have time?!
Beautiful poem! Magic definitely exists in my life, but I call it “love”. I also find magic every day in writing and reading. There’s nothing like a good story to take you away from reality!
Love as magic. I like it – thanks for sharing.
I love this! And I feel the same as the writer above. Magic these days is simply love. Beautiful post X
Thanks Robo! I like that idea too.
Wow you are amazing! I wish I could write as well as you! Just incredible!! I loved reading this π
Thank you. These comments are really moving. My heart feels very full right now!
Fabulous poem Em, really clever, you are a natural, kim
Thank you Kim! I feel like a fraud – rhymes just come to me. Perhaps it’s magic?!
The first verse of the second stanza is my favourite π
Thank you. That’s the first one I wrote!
A simply stunning piece. tearful. Thank you so much for linking this up with #convocoffee – we all need a little magic xx
Thanks Josefa. Thank you for hosting #convocoffee! I loved the magic prompt.
