(I)
Farewell to you, beloved friend
I do not need you now
I know the workings of the world
The what
The why
The how
You were fun to believe in for a time
But the world, it works without you
And as I lost my innocence
I could not help but doubt you
Spells have tricks behind them
Illusions, an explanation
So go
You no longer have a place
In my imagination
So go
You no longer have a place
In my imagination
(II)
I never thought we’d meet again
It’s caught me by surprise
To see you’ve found a new home
There
Inside my children’s eyes
The bubble wand is aptly named
From nothing, bubbles grow
And why do rainbows appear in the sky?
They don’t presume to know
The way that flowers bloom, then die
The way the traffic lights change
To them, these things aren’t scientific
But marvellous
Wonderful
Strange
They gaze anew at everything
The sun, its resting place
They even gaze in wonder
At this tired, haggard face!
But while they see you everywhere
I need only look one way
At them
My girl
My baby boy
Each and every day

As soon as I started reading your post I imagined a child’s imaginary friend. xxx Rae
Emily says
Definitely part of the magic. My 3yo has five imaginary friends now. It’s adorable to watch.
Emily @ Have A Laugh On Me says
I never had an imaginary friend, but I hope my kids do, I bet it would be nice and comforting! xx
Emily says
I don’t think I ever had one. Will have to ask my mum!
ghostnapped says
Magic post ! I believe in all things magic – life would be boring without it!

Thanks, Ashley. I’d like to. I do think my kids are pretty magical!
Katie Oliveira da Silveira says
So beautiful, and made me really emotional – in a good way. It’s like saying farewell to childhood. Magic, Em. xx

Renee Wilson says
Wow. This is really impressive. You are such a talented writer.
Emily says
That is so lovely. Thank you.
Emily Morgan says
Oh wow, you captured how I feel so perfectly. The wonder on kids’ faces and the way the smallest things are miraculous to them – it’s one of my greatest joys of being a mother.
Emily says
I was just talking to a friend about this. They went to an animal sanctuary and their child was amazed by the kangaroo’s legs. And it makes you amazed too. They ARE amazing. So strong! The kangaroo can jump so far with them! Things really do seem magical when you take the time to notice them again.

Maxabella, you have no idea how happy this comment has made me. All of them have, but I respect and enjoy your writing so much that this has just made my day. Thank you.
Leanne Winter says
Oh Emily, I love it! At first I thought you were talking specifically about belief in Santa Clause which would have been very timely as we’re about to go through our first Christmas with our oldest no longer believing in Santa. Boo hoo! I can’t help feeling we’ve lost something…but that’s growing up, isn’t it?
Emily says
It is indeed! Very timely – I’m dreading the day our oldest doesn’t believe. She’s three-and-a-half – surely I have time?!
J.C. Wolfe says
Beautiful poem! Magic definitely exists in my life, but I call it “love”. I also find magic every day in writing and reading. There’s nothing like a good story to take you away from reality!
Emily says
Love as magic. I like it – thanks for sharing.
robomum says
I love this! And I feel the same as the writer above. Magic these days is simply love. Beautiful post X
