Every Father’s Day, my kids get their dad a book about how awesome he is. Sometimes it’s an interactive book, one to which they’ve added photos or drawings. Sometimes it’s a song. Sometimes it’s just a beautiful story, with beautiful illustrations to match.
We have an entire shelf dedicated to such books about dad. And one or two books about mum.
Until now.
I got an early Mother’s Day present from the team at Macmillan. Two, in fact – one for each child to fill in.
Three, in fact – because I’ve got a spare one to give away! Do you want an early Mother’s Day present too? Read on!

I Love My Mum Because / Petra James and Alissa Dinallo
(Macmillan, 2019)
This book is for you and your mum. Draw, decorate, colour in, count, spot the mum, make a butterfly (or two) and then present the book to your mum for any special occasion: birthday, Xmas, Mother’s Day… or just because.
This book is so sweet. Oh. So. Very. Sweet.
I Love My Mum Because is a book with enough lovelies to stand on its own, but also with enough opportunities for your children to make it their own and feel they’ve created it themselves.
Colouring in. Making wishes. Counting stars. Completing mazes. Decorating cakes.
My kids love their mum because I’m cuddly, kind and respectful. (But don’t take my word for it…)
And I love this book because, however self indulgent it sounds, it’s nice to sit with your kids and read about how much they love you.
And you can do that with your very own copy in time for Mother’s Day. You can purchase I Love My Mum Because from Booktopia here or from Book Depository here, or you can enter for your chance to win below!

Amy @ HandbagMafia says
What colour? I asked her and she said red and blue, because she’s seen it in her “all about the body” books!
That’s my little scientist <3
Emily says
Literal answers are literally the best!
Toni says
Miss 2 is orange because she’s passionate, bright, happy and also cheeky, stubborn and fiery. Equal parts yellow + red!
Emily says
That’s so beautiful! I love the different elements to her personality.
Karleen says
Miss 4 would be pink inside as it’s her favorite colour but also because she is so kind, thoughtful and loving.
Emily says
Naawwww. What a beautiful response. She’d be so excited to know she’s her favourite colour!
Betsy says
Teddy would be blue.
Heart as big as an ocean,
Smile as wide as a river,
Laughter like raindrops on a sunny day.
Emily says
I can see this! Thank you for the beautiful entry.
Kerilee says
My child has the all the colours of the rainbow inside. He’s a complex creature yet has had the privilege of no significant darkness.
Emily says
Oh, and what a beautiful privilege that is. Thank you.
