Interview with a preschooler (the dad edition)

September 22, 2015 By Emily 30 Comments

Last year, I interviewed my daughter about her relationship with me, and Interview with a toddler was the result.

This year, I thought I’d do it again. But this time, I decided to ask her about her dad.

Here are the results. A dad-focused interview with a five-year-old. Enjoy!

What is the best thing about having him as your dad?

I love him and he loves me.

What is the worst thing about having him as your dad?

I don’t know. Nothing.

What’s daddy’s worst habit?

Sometimes he roars very loud and that scares me so much. He knows he shouldn’t do that because I’ve told him. He just doesn’t listen sometimes.

What’s daddy’s best habit?

He gets me treats and takes me to the park.

What do you admire about daddy?

His beard.

Why do you love daddy?

Because he’s handsome.

What do you like about being a kid?

I get to go to kinder and I have a little brother and I like playing with my cousins.

What do you dislike about being a kid?

Being sent to my room. I don’t like the rules sometimes.

What is your favourite thing to do with daddy?

Go to special nights at kinder and go to the park and go swimming.

What is your favourite meal that daddy cooks?

Tacos. And pizza! They’re the only things he really cooks when mummy makes him have a turn.

Why is daddy lucky to have you as a daughter?

Because he loves me. And I’m pretty, I think. He says so all the time.

Is there anything else you’d like to say about your daddy?

He’s special to me. Me and Mitchell really really love him all the way from our house to Echuca and back!

And, because I didn’t want to leave him out, here are a few answers from my two-year-old son before he got distracted.

What is the best thing about having him as your dad?

Sing Boos (Blues).

What is the worst thing about having him as your dad?

(blank stare)

What’s daddy’s worst habit?

Cake please, mum. Cake? Mitchy cake please mum? PLEASE? (goes to kitchen to not-so-patiently wait for a slice of cake)

Have you interviewed your children? How would they answer these questions?

What do you admire about daddy? His beard! That is gold. It is a very impressive beard I must say. I also love that you make daddy have a turn at cooking sometimes too. Ahh they come out with the cutest things. I tried to interview my daughter for the toddler one last year and it pretty much turned out like your interview with Mitchell. Perhaps I’ll try again now that she’s older x

She is the reason he still has it. Every now and then he asks her if he should shave it off and she has a meltdown. NO, DADDY, NO! I LOVE IT!

Kids come out with the best lines and “He just doesnโ€™t listen sometimes” is one of my favourites! As you know Em, your post last year inspired me to interview Miss T (known as Miss TT back when she was still a toddler tornado). It is still one of my favourite posts. Sure, she did all the work by answering my questions but how I loved that little insight into her world. Mitchell is like my Mr TT – they may have to wait another year or two!

I loved your interview last year! I’m hoping M will be ready for an interview next year. It’ll be fun to get his answers!

Cute. They seem to get bored quickly don’t they? I started asking my son similar questions about his Dad for Fathers Day. I got through 3 and he was done!

My daughter doesn’t get bored; she loves stuff like this! But my son? Definitely bored. Wondering if it’s an age and stage thing, or a different strokes thing.

I know! It was hard not to laugh when she said that. And then cry, because I had this picture of OGRE MUM GRRRRR YOU MUST COOK! in my head. Boo hoo. Save some cake for me!

Just too cute! I think I’d need a strong cup of coffee before hearing some of my kids answers, though not during, I’m pretty sure that they’d make me laugh and spurt it everywhere.

Haha, that’s true! I want to ask each year, although when we’re approaching the teen years I’m sure I won’t want to hear some of the answers.

It is her absolute favourite thing about him. There will be tears if he ever shaves it off. Many tears. (None from me, though.)

Oh Em, that’s so gorgeous. All of it.

I’m supposedly interviewing a friend’s 4yr old about some books but we’ve not had much luck in connecting yet. I love the idea but am not sure it’s going to work….

    Love the pics as well!

Thanks Deb! If the 4yo is passionate about books, I think it’ll work. It’s all about finding the right topic. (She says like she knows what she’s talking about… while speaking in the third person…)

Seriously, this is just the cutest! I really need to start doing something like this with Punky. In fact you’ve given me a really cool idea for a Christmas present for Dave from the girls.

I have no idea where Echuca is but I assume it is FAR! Gorgeous girl! And I can’t believe Mitchell is two! TWO!! Wasn’t it just yesterday you were pregnant with him?

Haha, Echuca is about 2.5 hours from Melbourne (it’s NNW, on the Murray River). By comparison, A tells me that she loves me to Bendigo and back (1.5 hours, central VIC – OUCH!) and that she loves M to Perth and back (I’m sure you know where Perth is. Mitchell wins!).
