International Book Giving Day giveaway!

February 14, 2015 By Emily 26 Comments

Happy Valentine’s Day! I can’t think of anything better than sitting down with the one I love, heart racing, excitement building, and then reaching out to finally – finally…

…turn the page.

It’s International Book Giving Day! Sorry love gurus, but books are WAAAAY more exciting than Valentine’s Day.

This time last year, I hosted my first ever giveaway. And it was so much fun, I’m doing it again!

This year, I have three excellent prizes to give away. Something for young ones, something for older ones, and something for us ‘grown-ups’. (Including those of us who’d never classify ourselves as ‘grown-up’, but have hit a certain age.)

All-prizes

So here’s a bit more detail about each of the prizes.

—

Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy / Lynley Dodd

(Puffin Books, 2013)

hairy-maclary-from-donaldson-s-dairy

Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy is a children’s classic. I’ve reviewed it (briefly) before, and that post got such lovely comments that I just had to include the title in this giveaway.

That, and it’s my little man’s current favourite book. This is what I often find when I go to check on him during nap time:

Mitchell-HM

If you haven’t yet had the pleasure, make sure you meet Hairy and his friends Hercules, Bottomley, Muffin, Bitzer and Schnitzel as they head off for a walk in this 30th birthday edition.

—

The Hunger Games trilogy / Suzanne Collins

(Scholastic, 2008)

Hunger-Games-trilogy

If you haven’t heard of The Hunger Games, I’d like to ask you two things: where have you been?; and, seriously, where have you been?

The Hunger Games trilogy tells the tale of Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year-old from a future in which the districts of Panem must send their children to fight to the death for the annual Hunger Games.

(Quick thank you to Roadshow Entertainment for these books. I won them as part of a MASSIVE prize package in a Twitter competition I didn’t even realise I was entering! You’ve just gotta love a hashtag game.)

—

The Narrow Road to the Deep North / Richard Flanagan

(Vintage, 2014)

the-narrow-road-to-the-deep-north

Wow. Just, like, totally, OMG, wow. (And that’s why I’ll never write a book like this.) I just finished reading The Narrow Road to the Deep North, and I’m still reeling. Considering I’d just read All the Light We Cannot See (also brilliant!), and seen The Imitation Game and Unbroken, I didn’t think I’d be this impressed by yet another tale set in World War II.

I was wrong.

This tale of young surgeon Dorrigo Evans, who ends up in a Japanese POW camp on the Thai-Burma death railway, is inescapably moving and beautifully written. This book won the Man Booker Prize last year, and it’s very clear why. I’m still thinking about it.

—

So, do any of those titles tickle your fancy? Would you like to enter?

Here’s how: simply leave a comment telling me in 15 words or less why you want the book(s). You can enter for each book (or trilogy), but please leave a separate comment for each book (or trilogy) so that your entry isn’t misallocated (or simply dismissed). And don’t forget to include your email address so I can get in touch!

{Here comes a whole lot of fine print stuff. Yawn. This competition is open to Australian entrants only, and delivery must be to an Australian address. This competition is based on skill. My judgement is final, and no correspondence will be entered into. Unless you have read any of these books and would like to discuss their contents. In which case, let’s correspond! There are three separate prizes: a copy of Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy; a copy of all the books in The Hunger Games trilogy (three books); and, a copy of The Narrow Road to the Deep North. Competition opens 7.00am Saturday 14 February and closes 11.59pm Saturday 28 February, AEDT. Yawn. Winners will be contacted and must respond within three days to claim their prize. Winners will be announced in an update to this post and on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram when winners are confirmed. This is not a sponsored post. All prizes were purchased by, or awarded to, me. (For the record, I’m not palming off things I don’t want; I already own a copy of The Hunger Games trilogy.) Yawn. The end. Zzzzz.}

—

This giveaway has now closed. Congratulations to Sallyann Silver, Kieran and Joyce de Silva for winning copies of Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy, The Hunger Games and The Narrow Road to the Deep North respectively. I hope you enjoy your books!

—

And if you can’t wait for the winner to be announced and would like to purchase the books, here’s where you can get them:

You can purchase Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy from Booktopia here, or from Book Depository here.
You can purchase The Hunger Games (trilogy boxed set) from Booktopia here, or from Book Depository here.
You can purchase The Narrow Road to the Deep North from Booktopia here, or in hardback from Book Depository here (paperback currently unavailable).

—

So, hit me with your best shot! Which book(s) would you like to win, and why? And good luck!

My two sons have so far been deprived of Hairy Mclary. I’d love to win this one to get a push to actually introduce them to the series! I’ve heard good things…

The Narriw Road pretty please. To read and drown out the ‘noise’ of everyday life and to then realise, all this ‘noise’ makes a pretty incredible life.

I can probably still recite Hairy Maclary from memory, it’s definitely one of my favourite books from when I was a kid. In fact, Lynley Dodd used to occasionally go into my mum’s classroom back in NZ to test out new stories on her kids! I’ve heard fabulous things about the Richard Flanagan book though!

Flanagan’s book with a title that reads like a cryptic clue. How could I resist!

I’m not entering, as I own the Richard Flanagan and the Hairy McLary, and have no need for The Hunger Games, just wanted to say, how awesome is The Narrow Road to the Deep North? I loved that unresolved love affair, and the haunting encounter in Sydney, so many years later. I sent him a card congratulating him for winning the Booker, I have a bit of a history of back and forth correspondence with him, starting from when I was 21.

Ooh, a bit of history with Richard? How fascinating! I thought the book was brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. I also loved the unresolved affair – so much more like real life than the loose ends tied up approach. All of it. Such an important book to read.
