You know that feeling you get when you hold a brand-spanking-new baby, and they’re so soft and squishy and adorable and trusting and THAT SMELL, oh that newborn smell, hits you and you tear up and blame that eyelash you had in your eye last week as you wonder if anyone would notice if you just kept this baby forever?
No? Just me?
I’m actually done having kids. (Unless the universe decides otherwise, of course.) But man oh man, do I still get hit hard by the cluck-cluck train every time I hold a bub!
(These were my babies. CLUCK CLUCK CLUCK.)
So… it’s song rewrite time! Here’s a little ditty I wrote called ‘Clucky’. A ditty you’re supposed to read to the tune of Pharrell Williams’s ‘Happy’.
Enjoy.

It might seem crazy what I’m about to say
I don’t wanna be pregnant, not another day
But when I hold a bub, I could go to space
Keep it forever, wouldn’t that be ace
Because I’m clucky
Cluck along if you feel like babies are just too cute
Because I’m clucky
Cluck along if you just want to squeeze that Wondersuit
Because I’m clucky
Cluck along if you don’t even care about the poo
Because I’m clucky
Cluck along if you feel like that’s what you wanna do
Here come bad news talking this and that
Yeah, this bub ain’t mine, gotta give it back
I’m sure I’m okay, I’ll be just fine
Actually can I please hold it just one more time?
Here’s why…
Because I’m clucky
Cluck along if you feel like babies are divine
Because I’m clucky
Cluck along if you think bubs are cute even when they whine
Because I’m clucky
Clap along if you don’t care about the lack of sleep
Because I’m clucky
Clap along if this baby is something you want to keep
Clucky, bring me down
Can’t nothing, bring me down
Cuddles too fun to bring me down
Can’t nothing, bring me down
Because I’m clucky
Clap along if you feel like a baby knows everything
Because I’m clucky
Clap along if you want, and join in with me and sing
Because I’m clucky
Clap along if you know that happiness is a bub
Because I’m clucky
Clap along if you’re in my super duper clucky club
—
So who’s joining my club? Do you get a case of the cluck-clucks when you hold a bub, or are you relieved to hand it back?
Leanne @ Deep Fried Fruit says
You are far too clever!! LOL.
Can’t wait to see the film clip …
I am not clucky.
We are DONE DONE DONE DONE DONE DONE, we are DONE! Thank you Maddons …
Leanne @ Deep Fried Fruit
Emily says
Hahaha, that song is so useful! We are done gets sung around here a bit, too. Just not in this respect!
Amy @ HandbagMafia says
I’m done. I hate that I’m done. But it’s financial for us. So yep, totally get the clucks and how!
Emily says
I hate that I’m done and I’m also so grateful. On balance it’s probably good that we’re done!
Em G says
love it, Em! I’ll be sure to bring the twins over for some cuddles 🙂
Emily says
If you don’t, I’ll be banging your door down!
Caitlin says
Yup. I’m clucky. My last kids are three and it’s really hit me lately that my baby days are over. It’s very sad. Yesterday I held a baby for an extended period, I found it was much nicer than watching a baby and feeling clucky because somehow, there was some sense of relief that I got to hand that adorable hunk of chunk back and not change the smelly nappy.
Emily says
This song rewrite was brought on by a day of packing up baby toys and clothes. Passing them on to friends – yay – but it was such a weird feeling to put a solid line under the baby days.
Mumabulous says
My version will help with that.
Clap along if you feel that you don’t wanna sit in poo
(Change a nappy)
Clap along if you feel that you wanna be dry too
(Change a nappy)
Clap along if you know what dry bum means to you
(Change a nappy)
Clap along if know whatcha Mum has gotta do
Still clucky?
Emily says
Yep. Still clucky. I like what you did there, though. I think you need to do more of it over at Mumabs. x
Vicki @ Knocked Up and Abroad says
You know, I’ve never been a clucky person. I never have gone goo goo over a little baby which is why I am totally INSANE having another one!?!? I’m not sure why I thought I needed to do that. Great ditty but x
Emily says
I felt like that before my first. OH MY GOODNESS WHAT AM I DOING? I AM USELESS WITH KIDS. And now I’m just cluck cluck cluck. Weird.
Ingrid @ Fabulous and Fun Life says
I know exactly what you mean! I’m totally done and dusted BUT I am so clucky! Amd that newborn baby smell – love it!
Emily says
Ah, that smell! I swear I can conjure it even without a baby around!
Raychael aka Mystery Case says
My youngest started high school this year and my eldest is now in Year 11. I can’t ever remember being clucky and that hasn’t really changed. Although I don’t have much access to new born babies these days, with my younger extended family who are at the baby making stage in life now 4000km away.
We’ve had the neighbour’s cat decide to adopt us. It’s a rather eccentric and gorgeous ragdoll. I’ve never been a cat person but you wouldn’t know it, if you looked at me these days. I wonder if it’s my way of dealing with the cluckiness and the girls getting older and far too independant. Somewhere different to focus my energy.
Emily says
So you’re… meowy? Ha!
Lauren @ Create Bake Make says
Yep, that’s me! As much as I wish our baby days weren’t over unless a medical miracle occurs we are done. You’ve nailed it again!
Emily says
Thanks Lauren.
Veggie Mama says
The only time I get (mildly) clucky is when my two-year-old is extra toddler-cute. I don’t get clucky over babies (the sleepless nights ruined me), nor do I get clucky over other people’s kids. But a two-year-old? heaven help me!
Emily says
Fair enough! I had a good sleeper and a shocking one, but bubs still get me. My eldest didn’t hit the ‘terrible twos’ until she turned three. My one-year-old is already there!
Jess says
oh I haven’t started on the baby train yet, so this song is very relevant for me! Haha, would love to see the film clip too.
Emily says
I might put the call out for some help with the film clip! Would love to see shots of readers going goo-goo-gah-gah over babies.
Erika @ Ever-changing Life of a Mum says
Too cute! I’ve never been overly clucky and we thought we were ‘done’ too. But life had other ideas and now I’m pregnant with baby #3 who is due next month. So perhaps while you’re spinning Pharrell Williams, I could play Justin Bieber’s ‘Never say never’ 🙂
Emily says
Chookas for next month! And no, while the title fits, I would not expect you to have to listen to Bieber!
Sandra says
Your are so cute and clever Xx
Emily says
Thanks Sandra! So sweet.
Maxabella says
I love this one!!! I always feel clucky when I hold a newborn, but only because I KNOW I’m handing him back. If it was mine, I wouldn’t feel clucky in the slightest. x
Emily says
That’s an interesting point – maybe the fact I don’t have to do the hard things makes it even sweeter now!
Jody at Six Little Hearts says
Haha! I will always be clucky. I am done but I would always accept more. There’s no space in the car now, no room in the house, so practicality has stepped in. I am strong huh?!
Emily says
You are strong! And wow, you’d still have more. Big fat hat tip to you.
Malinda @mybrownpaperpackages says
ha ha – gold – this could be the next big hit. Now all you need to do is vlog it and you will be a sensational hit 🙂
Emily says
Sensational hit, not so much. But thanks!
Toni @ Finding Myself Young says
This is awesome Em! I’m totally clucky, all the time!
Emily says
Thanks Toni! And I’m glad you get it!
Robyn says
Hahahaha brilliant! You know I actually sang the whole way through that song!! I haven’t held a new baby for a long time, but I think I might be a bit scared too anyway – THAT SMELL!!! It might make me weak at the knees x
Emily says
HOORAY for making people sing! Yep, that smell. Gah.
Kathy says
The perfect tune to be clucky too – I wonder whether we ever grow too old for it, because babies are just sooooo cute.
Emily says
They are. Even though they’re also kind of ugly at first. (Oh my gosh, did I type that out loud?!)
Hugzilla says
Bahahhhahhahah! No cluckiness here, EVER, but your little ditty made me want to go and get knocked up again. Gold.
Emily says
Wow. When my clucky words reach even the non-clucky, I know my work is done!
EssentiallyJess says
Nope! I rarely get clucky these days. I think you should have another one, on account of the ones you have being so cute!!
Very cool song, as always.
Emily says
Thanks Jess – I think they’re cute too. Bias schmias.
Vanessa says
I’m officially scared of kids and decline the holding them offer in case I drop them…
Emily says
Haha, that was DEFINITELY me before having kids! I remember sitting down with my arms locked into position and making my brother place my niece in my arms and rearrange her because I had no idea what I was doing!
JodiGibson (@JFGibsonWriter) says
Great stuff Em. I don’t really get clucky. Maybe in a few (like twenty) years when my daughters are ready to bring home bubs!
Emily says
Oh wow, grandparenthood. Nope, my head can’t go there yet!
Renee Wilson says
Another awesome rewrite! How long does it take you to do those? You are spot on with all of them. Oh yes, I’m most definitely clucky. My brother is having identical twins in the very near future and I can not wait to hold those wee babies tight 🙂
Emily says
Thanks Renee! If I can’t get pretty much the whole song done in my head in ten minutes I ditch it and move on to the next one. I have a few ideas for the next one at the moment, but if you have any suggestions, please share!
Bec @ History of Parenting says
Yep. But I get to mind my 8 month old niece one day a fortnight, which is perfect:)
Emily says
That’s an excellent amount of cuddle time. And on a schedule. Love it.
Nicole- Champagne and Chips says
You are hilarious 🙂
Emily says
Thanks Nicole! x
Sarah from Creating Contentment says
oh I love you!!!
Emily says
Back at you x
Tegan says
I am so done. Every now and then I get an inklining and then I come crashing back to reality. I am happy to nurse the cuteness, but also more than happy to hand them back too!
Emily says
Fair enough!
Natalie @OurParallelConnection says
I want to buy this on iTunes… this is brilliant .. I am done 4 kids later and I am done. But I still love new babies though.
Emily says
Oh wow, if I can make money on iTunes I’d better get cracking on the film clip!
Bec @ The Plumbette says
Very funny rewrite! I would have another baby if I could but I am content with my 3 and the pregnancy would kill me. Phoebe is 7 months and so I am enjoying every moment with her knowing she’s my last.
Emily says
Yep, I cannot CANNOT WILL NOT do pregnancy again. Your three are ADORABLE. x
Sonia Life Love Hiccups says
I am always clucky and I think I always will be. I’m done though… I think. No I am done xx
Emily says
Haha, love the confidence! x
Tash @ Gift Grapevine says
Awesome work Em! I am insanely clucky but as I’m now done need to live vicariously through my friends. I loved being pregnant and having babies (both times) but as soon as I’m feeling clucky, I just remind myself that babies do eventually turn into toddler tornadoes.
Emily says
That’s one benefit of being the first of my friends – we’re done, but many of my friends are only just starting. Plenty of bubs to cuddle!!
Bele @BlahBlah says
Oh yeah, I’m clucky oh so clucky but I’m done having kids, so I’m down with your find tune x
Emily says
That sounds like a rap! You can be the featuring artist in my song if you like. x
Clare @ Checks and Spots says
You clever cookie! I LOVE this…and now I have your version of ‘Clucky’ stuck in my head!!
I know what mean about feeling clucky. We’ve finished having babies as well, but I’ll always be the first in line to hold a newborn! Oh the smell! Oh the chubby little legs! But after a good squeeze and sniff of their beautiful smell I’m happy to give them back!
xx
