It’s Valentine’s Day! A day to tell your significant other that they mean the world to you. That you couldn’t live your life without them, and that you’d never before appreciated the beauty of a sunset until they shone upon your life…
YAWN.
This year, 14 February is important for another reason. It is International Book Giving Day.
International Book Giving Day is a day dedicated to getting new, used and borrowed books in the hands of as many children as possible.
And, as you may have noticed, I’m a little bit in love with books.
So here it is. My first ever giveaway. There are no sponsors jumping on board; no truckloads of megatonnes of gifts arriving at doorsteps all over the nation.
Just me saying thanks to those of you who read what I have to say. This is my 418th post after all. It’s a very special occasion!
What’s up for grabs? Your choice of one of our family’s favourite books.
What do you have to do to win?
-
Choose which of our family’s favourite books you’d like to give to a child.
-
Tell me, here and/or on facebook, which book you’ve chosen, which child you’d like to give it to, and why.
-
Include your email address so I can contact you if you win. (If you’d prefer not to include your email address in a comment, you can send me your email address or send a private message on facebook. Make sure you let me know which comment is yours!)
That’s it! I will choose my two favourite answers, one from the comments on this post and the other from facebook (where the commenter must also like the page), and reward the winners with their chosen book.
This competition is open to anyone, but delivery must be to an Australian address. So if you live in Australia, sweet. If you’re overseas, but know a child in Australia you’d like to give a book to, feel free to enter if you’re happy for me to send the book directly to the child in question.
This competition is open until Sunday 23 February, 2014.
Good luck! And please #giveabook to a child this International Book Giving Day.
How will you celebrate International Book Giving Day? Which book would you like to win, for whom, and why?
NB: This is not a sponsored post. This giveaway is entirely self-funded and self-managed. Apologies in advance for any delays in acquiring and sending selected books – some of our family’s favourite books are surprisingly difficult to come by. To misquote Rachel Hunter, it probably won’t happen overnight, but it will eventually happen. And you’ll be kept informed along the way.
This is a game of skill. I will choose my two favourite comments (one from this blog post and the other from the facebook page), which may be funny, sweet, clever or a combination of all three. Or none of these things. I’ll have to wait and see what tickles my fancy!
The winners will be notified by email on Monday 24 February, and will have three days to respond to the email before new winners will be chosen. Winners will be announced here on the blog on Sunday 2 March, both in an update to this post and in a new Top web reads of the week post.

418 posts?! That’s awesome. Congratulations. I didn’t realise it was International Book Giving Day. Might go out and buy the girls one each today.
When I saw Mulga Bill’s Bicycle it brought back happy memories from my childhood. This used to be one of my favourite books. I’d like to introduce my three year old to dear old Bill and his disastrous biking escapades.

Congratulations! What an awesome day. I love your list, it just brought back so many memories. Particularly Mulga Bill’s Bicycle, I remember reading it at the same time as learning how to ride my bike and was having a similar experience. Apparently, I used to sing ‘Bad Habits’ whilst riding and every time I got to the bad habits part I fell off. Ah, the power of words…

Oh my what a wonderful list of books to choose from! Theres a few there I have been dying to tryout, but even though It’s the first time I’ve come across it I would pick Room on the Broom, but because I love how your Ashleigh has adapted the Rhymes, and I could just see my Lolly doing the same thing.
BTW A whole lot of wow for such a huge post amount, can’t wait to read your 500th post.

I’m another Mulga Bill’s Bicycle , a wonderful childhood memory for me and and my boys.
I didn’t know it was International Book giving day.

Who is this Mulga Bill and why is he so famous?? I have not yet come across him nor his bicycle. Some kind of rubbish childhood I had. Congrats on such a huge and un-round number of posts! Well done 🙂

Aww how lovely of you!!
I would choose Fox In Sox for my Taity!
Taite was a keen chicken-egg collector until recently. A naughty fox (possibly wearing sox), decimated our last two chookies a few weeks back. Dang we miss those little ladies!! (Buying eggs again sucks!)

Congratulations on 418 posts, that is amazing! It was after reading one of your posts that I immediately ordered a copy of Mulga Bill’s Bicycle last year, and it’s become a favourite in our house. I would love a copy of the Nickle Nackle to read to my boys. Great choice of books, many of them are also our favourites too!

Room on the Broom, because it looks like it’d be funny! I’d give it to my two children – my oldest (6) loves witches and she’d love reading it to her 2-year-old brother. nic.tesla@gmail.com

Congrats xxx I’d love “The Wonky Donkey” to give to my 3 daughters to share (ages 6, 3, 2) because everytime when one of them has an accident (for want of a better word he he he) we scream “Stinky, Stinky, Stonky, Daddy bought a Donkey, Donkey Died, [insert at fault name here], Stinky, Stinky Stonky” and Mummy gets a high five if she can clean it up before the song finishes. Some family traditions are strange and cannot be explained, like that. The book would make us giggle. lol
Thanks for the opportunity and the giggles! Amanda feline1981@yahoo.com

It’s been years and years since I read Mulga Bills Bicycle! I would have that one for sure, and read it to my kiddies. 🙂

A HUGE congrats on 418 posts Emily. I wish I had known about International Book Giving day earlier so I could have brought myself a new book for my hubby to give me on Valentine’s Day. haha xx

What a lovely and generous giveaway, Em!
“Room On A Broom” and “Mulga Bill’s Bicycle” have been huge hits on our home.
The twinions are now getting into “The Cat In The Hat” so I reckon they would love “Fox in Socks”
Maria says
My niece would love “Fox in Socks” by Dr Seuss. She loves being read to by her favourite auntie …..
Pete I says
I nominate:
– Hannah G to receive ‘Stuck’
– Charlotte W to receive ‘Nickle Nackle’
The somewhat dubious rationale is that the characters on the front cover look like their respective Dads.
On another note: I’m amazed that despite what I thought was an extensive book collection – we’ve only got one of them. I agree A loves it, but I do cry a little inside every time she brings me a book with only one word of fruit on each page.

books are like a magnet to me! I have the wonkey donkey song on my iPod – it would be good to have the book too.
Emily says
Hi all,
Thank you so much for entering! Fantastic entries, and it was very hard to choose.
I have chosen, however, and notified the winners. So check your emails! I’ll re-choose on Thursday if I don’t hear back.
Winners announced on the blog this Sunday.
Cheers,
Em
